Gabala

Gabala, which is located about 225 km away from the capital city of Azerbaijan, is a perfect place for rest and tourism. The weather here is mild in spring and autumn, hot in summer and cold in winter. In addition to marvelous weather, Gabala suggests gorgeous historical monuments, which emerge all around the city and its vicinity. The city during six centuries served as the capital of the ancient state of Caucasian Albania. Archeological investigations give an evidence that Gabala functioned as the capital of Albania as early as 4th century BC. The ruins of the ancient town are situated in 15 km south-west of the modern site of Gabala, in the village of Chukhur Gabala on the territory between Garachay and Jourluchay rivers. Here you can find the ancient walls and towers. If you are a music lover, you should come to Gabala – in recent years the city has become the music capital of Azerbaijan. Annual International Music Festival – the festival of classical music is held here every summer starting from 2009, where musicians perform in the open air. Its participants are musicians from Europe, the U.S., Israel, as well as musicians from republics of the former USSR. Additionally, the contest of young pianists, jazz and mugham evenings are held in the framework of the musical festival. Currently, everything possible is made in the city for the sake of coming tourists. Many hotels, including world hotel chains were put up in Gabala. The city contains an ice skating rink and a Greek-style theatre, built especially for outside concerts. Tourist can make shopping in several modern shopping malls constructed within the city. Additionally, Gabala is home to Tufan Ski Complex, one of the biggest ski resorts throughout the whole Caucasus, which serves up to 3,000 ski lovers a day. Moreover, the largest entertainment park under the open sky in Azerbaijan – Gabaland is located at the area of 16 hectares in Gabala. Visitors are provided with extreme kinds of attractions, ice arena, carting, sports fields, theatre, convenient parking, great food in restaurants and cafes. In short, modern Gabala manages to combine both ancient greatness and modern development, and it can be said that Gabala is one of the most vivid examples of cities of contrasts, which are so loved by tourists.

Ancient Gabala

The area where Gabala Archaeological Center is located (local population call it as Chukhur Gabala) was built in the territory of the capital city of Gabala Albania since the 4th century BC. Archaeological researches are being conducted in this area since 1926. This archaeological center is divided into three areas for its functionality and for reflecting historical periods: “Gala”, “Salbir” and “Chaggalli”. The Chaggalli settlement (50 ha) consists of remains of city life that existed in the 4th century BC. Rich and cultural layers with a few meter thick dating to the 1-10th century in Salbir settlement (13 ha) and to the 1-7th century in Gala settlement (12 ha) of ancient Gabala were discovered. Ancient Area was the area of Gabala city in the 1st centuries AD, end of 2nd millennium BC. Wine storehouses consisting of more than 200 large-scale pitchers, elliptic remains of constructions, clay water, household items and wall ruins of air-brick were found to be here. Salbir settlement is located in the 1-10th centuries of the ancient Gabala city. The remains of old city, defence walls, farm walls, antique catacombs, pool, water supply line, ovens, Christian graves, cake beads belonging to the 2nd century AD were discovered. One of the most important monuments of the Gabala Archaeological Center is Ancient Fortress Walls. Located in Salbir archaeological area, these walls were built to defend Gala area from the north by trench, from the south by fortress wall. Fortress walls of Gabala are different from other medieval fortifications for their structure and appearance. Fortress walls were built of air-bricks and planed cobblestone. 15 different types of different bricks were used in the construction of fortress. The people involved in the construction of fortress were able to create a rare architecture by skilfully utilizing the measure and arrangement of burnt brick. The constellations in the right and left corners of fortress have come today and admire those who see it with its dignity

Nohur Lake

Nohur Lake is located in a natural groove among Gulluburun, Goydagh and Yumuru mountains. Nohur ghol which existed as a natural lake until 1949, used to be surrounded by a swamp covered with dense reeds and water plants and there was a lake with yellowish-green water in a deep groove in the central part of it. In 1949 a water-storage reservoir was constructed in the south part of this lake. Water of Damiraparan and Vandam rivers is spilt into Nohurgishlag reservoir. This lake within the populated area near Gabala – Ismayilli - Baku motor way is one of the most visited. Nohurgishlag water-storage reservoir has also a great contribution to the development of aquaculture and rowing sport. In winter thickness of the ice cover on the surface of the lake can reach 40-50 cm.

Gabala Shooting Center

Gabala Shooting Club is part of the Gabala Sport Club, a world-class facility that prepares the athletes for the national teams of Azerbaijan in shooting, boxing, karate, taekwondo, soccer, and judo. The reason behind building the GSC was to develop a multi-purpose and world-class shooting facility in Azerbaijan that can serve both as a recreational and entertainment center, and as a training place for the national shooting team and international professionals, as well as to promote the shooting as a sport in national level
